Six months ago, we hired a new team member. Their job title: Lead Research Analyst.
They monitor Reddit, LinkedIn, Hacker News, and industry forums daily. They identify companies actively looking for automation help. They score each lead, write a personalized outreach angle, and deliver it to our sales team by Monday morning at 7am.
Their salary: $0. They never miss a deadline. They don't take vacation. They're an AI agent running on Crossnode.
Why "Chatbot" Was the Wrong Mental Model
A chatbot responds to questions. An AI agent initiates actions, makes decisions, uses tools, and delivers results - without waiting to be asked. The difference isn't cosmetic. It's the difference between a calculator and an employee.
The Lead Pipeline We Built
Here's the actual workflow we set up on Crossnode for our "Lead Research Analyst" agent:
- Phase 3 - Deliver
- Phase 2 - Enrich & Score
- Phase 1 - Research
Digest Formatter
- Top 10 leads, ranked
- Email to Sales Team
- 7:00 AM Monday
- Saved to Lead DB for CRM import
Dedup Agent
- Remove already-seen URLs from database
LLM Scoring Agent
- Score each lead:
- Intent 0-100
- Budget Signal
- Urgency
- Outreach Angle
Reddit Scraper
- Search 15 subreddits for automation keywords
HN Scanner
- Search 'Ask HN' posts for service requests
LinkedIn Listener
- Posts mentioning 'looking for automation'
🕐 Trigger: Every Monday 07:00 UTC
Our multi-phase lead enrichment and scoring pipeline.
It takes the agent about 4–6 minutes to run, end to end. It would take a human about 3–4 hours to do the same job at equivalent quality.
The Honest Part: What Went Wrong First
I want to be transparent here because everything in marketing reads like a success story and I think that's unhelpful. The first version of this agent was garbage.
Mistake #1: We made one big agent that tried to do everything. It kept running out of context and losing track of where it was.
Fix: We broke it into separate specialist agents, each with one job. The Research Agent only researches. The Scoring Agent only scores. They pass data between them.
Mistake #2: We didn't define "done." Clear scope = consistent output. We had to tell the agent exactly what "good" looked like.
Mistake #3: We had no human-in-the-loop. Some leads were hilariously irrelevant (like someone needing help with an automated pill dispenser). We added a 10-minute review step on Mondays to audit the output.
What Job Title Would Your AI Have?
If you can write a clear job description - responsibilities, inputs, outputs, quality bar - you can probably build the agent. Start with one job. Build it properly. Watch it run. Then hire your next AI employee.
